My latest quick and dirty on creating trees using Arbaro is up. The next article will be on creating realistic sky spheres (it's in progress) and then we'll see. Otherwise, some bad links were cleaned up and some more under-the-hood website tweaks have happened.
Around the Povray community, a few new items to report:
Update: The creating trees link actually works now

Newsgroup Surfing and Software Updates
I had really hoped that I would have another article ready by this next post, but enough interesting stuff has happened to get me moving before then. To my credit, I did do some raytracing (see new logo, upper left hand corner), so I havn't been completely sluffing off. I've also joined the site up with the POV-Ray Ring. I havn't checked out all other other sites on the ring, but it's worth the wander if you've got some time. Now, into the good stuff.
If you're into rendering Earth shots, Nasa has just released the latest (and higher resolution) blue marble shots. Follow the talk on the Blue Marble thread

The Roadmap (a.k.a. nothing new right now)
Even though nothing visible has changed, I'm still plodding along here. Rita created quite a stir for Texas and things got wiley for a bit around here, so Povray was not at the top of my mind. I have been working on some website under-the-hood stuff that's not visible - some just housekeeping. Looking forward, I'm getting stuff together for articles on creating realistic sky_spheres, driving Povray from the command line, and creating trees using Arbaro. Stay tuned

Non-Povray Plug
This is a shameless plug, so if it doesn't look interesting to you, move on. I've been interested in hybrid vehicles for a while (my wife and I own one), but I'm frustrated about the quality of websites reporting on them and the technology. Some don't get much news, others get 10 repeats of the same article and are difficult to read through. I've started my own hybrid news site. Right now I'm focusing on good news tracking, which I find to be a weakness in the current hybrid car websites. If this is up your alley, check it out.
We now return to our regularly scheduled Povray shannagans

Articles, Software, and Newsgroup Wandering
There's been a lot that I've found interesting that's happened over the last 2 weeks, so it's time to get it all posted. First off, I've put up a new Web Walking article that collects introductory and beginner Povray tutorials. I've got to admit that finding some of those would've made it easier when I was starting out. I've also posted a new image in my gallery - it should've been the July-Aug IRTC submission, but I didn't make it. On that note, the next IRTC category is Opposites - get rendering!
After some time away from the day job, I've written up and published two more Quick And Dirty tutorials: Signatures Part 2 - The Gimp and Changing Aspect Ratios. Stop by, check them out, and tell me what I misspelled ;).
Also from the Povray world, more software releases:
Christoph Hormann announced MegaPOV 1.2.1, a bug-fix on 1.2
Alil announced YAPRM 0.4. The website's slow right now, so take it easy on them.
And finally, the latest IRTC round closed. I didn't make it in in time - I hope you did! No word yet on the next round's topic.

More Sky Spheres
I've changed up the Sky_sphere Library a bit. It now shows 4 sky_sphers a page and doesn't show the text content. I've also started creating some sunset sky_sphere examples based on actual photos. I did a Google search on sunset images and found some great images to work with.
Also in the news, more software updates:
The next Povray 3.7 beta is out. This one's valid until Sept 15.
I had noticed that the quick media rendering tutorial was designed assuming a 1280x1024 screen (what I was using at the time). It's been re-rendered and adjusted to be 1024x768 friendly. I'm going to make a conscious effort to keep the viewing sizes within reason in the future.

More Media
At long last, the quick media rendering tutorial is up. Looking ahead for the website, I'm going to write more in-depth on aspect ratios and light_groups, add some sky_spheres to the sky_sphere library, and do some under-the-hood work on the scripts driving the website. Stay tuned!
My media tutorial's wrapping up nicely and should (hopefully) be up this week. To tide things over, I'm starting a new article series, Web Walking, that's a glorified set of links on a topics with Povray renderings of available soure. My first one on media is up in the tutorials area.
That being said, lets see what else is going on in Povray land:
POV-Ray 3.7 beta 7 is out and valid until 8/15. Windows only, but probably runs under Wine for you Linux fiends
